La tour d'Eiffel

Y
ves and I went to France about 5 times in 2000. The majority of our stays were in Paris, though we also went to Brittany, the Pyrenees and Toulouse. In 2001 we went to France in September and December. We have not been this year (2002) except for the first week of January when we were in Paris (for New Year's Eve) because while I am applying for UK Residency, the immigration office has my passport. Hence we can't go anywhere outside Britain.

My favourite part of Paris is the little ethnic village near the Notre Dame Cathedral. 'Le Quartier Latin' The tiny winding pedestrian streets paved with uneven bricks are as old as Paris itself and there are lots of little kebab shops and restaurants packed into them.

Talking about these kebabs, let me just say, every kebab shop in the street is great! And, these are The Best Kebabs I have ever eaten in my life. The kebabs themselves are lashings of freshly carved meat stuffed into pitta bread, topped with salad and hot, crispy, golden french fries. This is all wrapped up in a triangular shape and they are so big you need two hands to hold it all.

Many people laugh at the idea of eating a kebab in Paris, because they don't associate the place with something simple. "It's Paris, it has to be extravagant." It's just not true. Try it, and let us know what you think.

In August 2000, we took a brief summer holiday in France. We flew to Paris first and stayed a couple of days in the city with Yves' cousin, Manu. Then we went and spent some time with Yves' uni friends in the countryside.

While there, we took a day trip to a theme park called 'Futuroscope' which was great fun and had a fantastic laser water fountain show at the end of the night.

Just before we left the countryside, we went to a special bird show at a ruined castle where eagles, hawks and vultures flew so close to our heads they sometimes knocked us over!!

On our trip in September 2001, we visited the Cote de Granite Rose. It's a very surreal landscape there. Dazzling blue waters reflecting off brilliant reddish rocks, pink granite and golden sandstone. It almost looks like an amusement park type setting. >
